‎Akure, the capital city of Ondo State, was thrown into chaos yesterday as hundreds of students and youths took to the streets to protest against the rising insecurity and failed promises of the present government.
The protesters, who converged on the city’s central square, carried placards and banners with inscriptions such as “End Bad Governance,” “Secure Our Future,” and “Fulfill Your Promises.”
The protest, which was peaceful, was organized by a coalition of student unions and youth groups from across the state. The protesters marched through the city’s major streets, causing traffic gridlock and drawing the attention of passersby.
According to the organizers, the protest was necessitated by the growing insecurity in the state, which has led to the loss of lives and property. They also lamented the failure of the present government to fulfill its campaign promises, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
‎”We are tired of the empty promises and the lack of action from our government,” said one of the protest leaders, who identified himself as Comrade Ade. “We demand that they take immediate action to address the security challenges facing our state and fulfill their promises to the people.”
The protesters also called on the government to take steps to address the rising cost of living, unemployment, and poverty in the state. They threatened to continue the protest until their demands were met.
The Ondo State Government has yet to respond to the protesters’ demands. However, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo, said in a statement that the government was committed to addressing the security challenges facing the state and fulfilling its campaign promises.
“We understand the concerns of the protesters and assure them that we are working tirelessly to address the issues they raised,” Ojogo said. “We appeal to them to remain calm and peaceful as we work towards finding solutions to the challenges facing our state.”
The protest in Akure is the latest in a series of demonstrations that have taken place across the country in recent weeks. The protests are a reflection of the growing discontent among Nigerians with the performance of their governments at all levels.
‎As the protesters in Akure continue to demand action from their government, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to their demands. One thing is clear, however: the people of Ondo State will no longer tolerate bad governance and are determined to hold their leaders accountable.
