‎In a heartbreaking incident in Awka, Anambra State, a police officer, Inspector Okolie Amechi, was fatally shot by his 10-year-old son in an accidental discharge on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

‎The tragic event occurred around 9:40 p.m. while the officer was on duty at Polaris Bank, situated along Zik Avenue by Okeke Street.

‎According to an internal police wireless message obtained by SaharaReporters, the officer’s son, Dominion Vincent, inadvertently discharged his father’s service weapon, resulting in the officer’s death and injuries to his younger brother.

‎The wireless message detailed that Inspector Okolie Amechi, identified by his service number AP/No. 262498, was visited by his three sons—Dominion Vincent (10 years old), Wisdom Vincent (8 years old), and Emmanuel Vincent (6 years old)—at his duty post at the bank. Unbeknownst to Dominion, his father’s AK-47 rifle, bearing Breach No. BA360691 and loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, was negligently cocked with the safety disengaged.

‎While playing with the weapon, Dominion pulled the trigger, striking his father in the spine from behind, causing a fatal injury. The bullet also struck his youngest brother, Emmanuel, wounding him in the back and right hand.

‎Both victims were immediately rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital in Awka for emergency treatment. Tragically, Inspector Okolie was pronounced dead on arrival, while Emmanuel, the injured 6-year-old, is currently receiving medical care and responding to treatment. The police have secured the weapon from the minor, and the case has been transferred to the Central Police Station (CPS) in Awka for a thorough investigation.

‎The internal police communication, dated June 15, 2025, expressed regret over the incident, highlighting the circumstances that led to the accidental discharge. It underscored the devastating consequences of the unsecured firearm, which was left in a dangerous state, allowing the young child to access and operate it.

‎The incident has raised concerns about firearm safety protocols, particularly for officers on duty in environments where family members or civilians may be present.

‎Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the negligent handling of the service rifle and the events leading up to the tragedy.

‎The incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of adhering to strict firearm safety measures to prevent such devastating accidents. As the investigation unfolds, the police and the community mourn the loss of Inspector Okolie Amechi, while wishing for the swift recovery of young Emmanuel.
